Reduviid Bugs

10.00

The reduviids, also known as assassin bugs, there are about 7,000 species of reduviids reported worldwide. Two reduviid bugs, Rhynocori smarginatus/ R. fuscipes, are important and effective predators of insect pests in many agro-ecosystems (soybean, groundnut, pigeonpea, cotton, castor, rice, cabbage, tobacco, pumpkin, okra, citrus, sugarcane, sesbania, apple etc.). Predaceous reduviids are of considerable economic importance because they reduce the pest population by killing the host quickly with their highly proteolytic saliva.

Predators or natural enemies are beneficial insects that feed on the pest  egg or larva  or  pupa or adult  stage and control the pest population. Predators are comparatively larger in size, cause sudden death to the pest . Predators are non-vegetarian insects and will not disturb the plants and attack only the pest. Predators are naturally present in the eco system and because of use of chemical pesticides these predators are lost. So we are forced to introduce them in the eco system to balance the lost equilibrium
