Nitrogen deficiency
Symptoms
- Stunted growth: Plants with N deficiency grow slowly and are stunted
- Pale color: Plants appear pale yellowish-green

Early Leaf spot
Symptoms
- Infection starts about a month after sowing
- Brown circular lesion with yellow halo on leaves


Late leaf spot
Symptoms
- Spots: Small, dark spots that appear on the leaf blades, petioles, and stems. The spots can grow to 3–8 mm in diameter and often merge to form irregular patches.
- Appearance: The disease usually appears a month after sowing and is most severe during flowering and harvesting.


Stem rot
Symptoms
- Germinating seeds: Infected seeds are covered in black, spongy fungi
- Stems: White fungal threads develop on the stem, and the stem base turns yellow
- Leaves: Lower leaves wilt first, followed by the upper leaves

Collar rot/ Crown rot
Symptoms
- Seed stage: Rotting of seeds
- Emergence stage: Circular brown spots on the cotyledons
- Crown stage: Large lesions on stem and spread upwards along the branches Drooping of leaves and wilting of plant


Pest Management
Red hairy caterpillar
Symptoms
- The larvae feed on the leaves gregariously by scraping the under surface of tender leaflets leaving the upper epidermal layer intact in early stages.
- Grown up larvae devour the entire foliage, leaving the main stem as the field grazed by cattle.

Symptoms
- Young larvae mine into the leaves and feed the leaflets.

Jassids
Symptoms
- Chlorotic patches at leaf tips, in a typical 'V' shape.
- leaf margins become necrotic, scorched known as hopper burn.


White grub
Symptoms
- Wilting of plants in patches.
- Adult beetles feed on the foliage and are capable of defoliating plants and even trees like neem, banyan. Feeding is carried out during night.
